Trinity Christian Academy debuted Eagle Stadium, a new home for its football team in Willow Park, Texas, with seating for 1,000 and an OES digital scoreboard. A single Electro-Voice MTS-4153 three-way point-source loudspeaker mounted on the scoreboard covers the field and the stands, driven and networked by Dynacord electronics in the press box.

The venue

A new home field for a growing school

Trinity Christian Academy is a growing college preparatory Christian school in Willow Park, Texas. Since its launch in 1993, the school has partnered with other local schools to share its sports facilities.

Eagle Stadium gives the Eagles football team a home of its own, with seating for 1,000 and an OES digital scoreboard. It is the first part of a multi-million dollar three-phase project that will add baseball and softball fields and track facilities.

The challenge

Sound for the whole stadium, visibility for the fans.

The school wanted the digital scoreboard and the sound reinforcement system as one integrated design: full audio coverage of the field and the stands, without compromising the scoreboard visibility fans need. Mounting a loudspeaker on the scoreboard itself called for custom engineering.

The system also had to grow. The stadium may expand with additional guest seating, and the later phases of the project will require networked systems.

The solution

A single point source, networked from the press box

Colby Howerton of OES Scoreboards recommended one Electro-Voice MTS-4153 three-way point-source loudspeaker mounted on the scoreboard. The selected MTS-4153-64 version has a 60° x 40° coverage pattern, combining four 15-inch woofers with dual coaxial mid/high compression drivers via a single waveguide, designed for cohesive high output with strong bass in large-scale applications. The OES engineering team built a custom bracket for the top of the center I-beam, matched to the loudspeaker's bolt pattern and disguised with a scrim featuring the Eagles mascot.

The fully weatherized loudspeaker is driven by a Dynacord IPX10:4 amplifier with OMNEO IP networking for Dante and OCA/AES70, delivering 96 kHz DSP with low latency. The amplifier is rack-mounted in the press box beside a Dynacord MXE5 Matrix Mix Engine, the control center and communications hub for system devices and IP-based peripherals. Staff run the system from a Dynacord TPC-1 touch panel, freely configured in SONICUE Sound System Software with customizable controls, schematic diagrams, and school colors.

The result

Scoreboard and sound, one integrated system.

A single point source now covers the field and the seating, and the integrated scoreboard and sound design gives the school the audio-visual performance it asked for, with the loudspeaker hidden behind the Eagles scrim.

The networked backbone leaves room to grow, from additional guest seating to the baseball, softball, and track facilities planned in later phases. It was one of the first applications done with an MTS loudspeaker, and OES will recommend similar packages again.
