Shopping Cart Festival, Offenburg

Shopping carts set the distance. Live sound filled the lot.

In summer 2020, Badensound and Edeka Südwest turned the parking lot of an Edeka supermarket in Offenburg into a concert ground. From August 31 until September 5, famous German artists performed for 500 people, the maximum then allowed for large gatherings, with shopping carts keeping the audience at a safe distance. An Electro-Voice X2 main PA and a complete Dynacord electronics chain, headed by the new MXE5 matrix mix engine in its German debut, carried the sound over Dante.

A festival concept built on shopping carts

Badensound event company worked out a new concert concept that uses existing infrastructure to host performances under local COVID regulations. A partnership with Edeka Südwest supermarkets turned the idea into the Shopping Cart Festival: from August 31 until September 5, 2020, famous German artists performed in the parking lot of an Edeka supermarket in Offenburg, with shopping carts serving as social distancing tools for the 500 visitors allowed on site.

The line-up included Michael Schulte, Christina Stürmer, Kelvin Jones & Jeremias, Glasperlenspiel, and Laith Al-Deen. The performers were keen to return to a live stage, and once Edeka released the budget, Badensound owner Johannes Moeck needed only 4 weeks to make the whole event happen. On the technical side, the festival doubled as the German debut of Dynacord's new MXE5 matrix mix engine.

“Now is exactly the right time to organize an attractive festival in the region, to offer artists a platform and to support the Corona-impacted event industry.”

The challenge

Stage a full festival under a 500-person limit

Large gatherings were capped at 500 people, and the event industry had been hit hard by the pandemic. The festival had to give artists a platform, keep visitors at a safe distance, and still sound like a real festival on an open-air parking lot.

That meant a main PA for the open site, stage fills and monitors for a full festival line-up, and an electronics platform that could run everything on one audio network. The whole event came together in 4 weeks.

  • A 500-person limit on large gatherings

  • Shopping carts as the social distancing tool

  • An open-air site in a supermarket parking lot

  • A full line-up of well-known German artists

  • 4 weeks to stage the whole event

The solution

An X2 main PA on a complete Dynacord chain

Badensound deployed an Electro-Voice X2 line-array system as the main PA, with 2 hangs of 12 X2-212 elements per side and low-frequency support from 16 X12-128 subwoofers. 12 Electro-Voice MFX multi-functional loudspeakers worked as stage fills and stage monitors, complemented by Dynacord V17 subwoofers and Cobra cabinets as drum fills, while 24 Electro-Voice XLE compact line-array elements covered near and out fills.

Dynacord amplifiers powered the entire system: 12 TGX20 4-channel and 3 IPX 10:8 8-channel amps delivered a total of 270 kW, with the new MXE5 matrix mix engine as the system head. All the electronics carry OMNEO IP architecture on board, so the whole rig ran on Dante audio without any retrofitting, and SONICUE sound system software handled setup, tuning, and monitoring.

“Our sound equipment from EV and Dynacord proved once again to be the best choice to guarantee a flawless event. I have already been approached regarding a repeat of this event. Thanks to Dynacord's support, I was privileged to work with the MXE5 for the very first time and I can only tell you that it will revolutionize the business!”

The result

Back on stage, with a repeat already requested

The festival brought live music back to Offenburg within the rules. The artists were back in front of a real audience, and Edeka Südwest reported a positive response to the concept, calling the tone of the event exactly right.

For Badensound, the week also proved the new system head under real conditions: the MXE5 made its German debut at the festival, and owner Johannes Moeck has already been approached about a repeat of the event.

  • Famous German artists back in front of a live audience

  • An audience of 500, the maximum then allowed

  • German debut for the Dynacord MXE5 matrix mix engine

  • A repeat of the event already requested
