Harley Days in Morzine, France

Louder than 25,000 Harleys: Festival sound in an Alpine square

For 4 days in July 2019, 65,000 members of the Harley Davidson Owners Group brought some 25,000 vintage motorcycles to the Alpine resort of Morzine for Harley Days, Europe's flagship celebration of all things Harley. By night, artists including Roger Hodgson of Supertramp and the Rockbox Symphony Orchestra played the main square. Production company Objectif+ delivered the sound with an Electro-Voice X-Line Advance X2 system, driven by Dynacord TGX amplification and set up in record time with SONICUE software.

The venue

A ski village taken over by 65,000 riders

Morzine is famous as an exclusive Alpine ski destination. In July 2019 the small French village hosted a very different crowd: 65,000 members of the Harley Davidson Owners Group, in town with some 25,000 vintage Harley Davidson motorcycles for Harley Days 2019, Europe's flagship celebration of all things Harley.

For 4 days the streets were filled with the roar of the world's most iconic motorcycles, while by night artists including Roger Hodgson of Supertramp and the Rockbox Symphony Orchestra delivered festival-style entertainment. Leading French production company Objectif+ has worked with Harley Davidson France for 20 years, and for CEO Gilles Zeni, Harley Days was one of 2019's biggest events.

“This has become such a big event and we need excellent sound. That’s why I rely on Electro-Voice and Dynacord. I used to be a sound engineer before I was with Harley Davidson, so I carefully considered the sound we needed to achieve. I found what I was looking for. EV and Dynacord provide us with the true rock ‘n’ roll sound which is in Harley Davidson’s DNA.”

The challenge

Festival sound in a main square surrounded by houses

The concert site was the main square in Morzine, hemmed in by houses on all sides. The Alpine scenery may be beautiful, but it throws back a lot of reflections, and thousands of Harley Davidsons driving around add constant engine noise.

With headline acts on the bill, Objectif+ needed an audio system to match, one that could cover the full square along with the rear and VIP areas.

  • A main square hemmed in by houses

  • Strong reflections from the surrounding Alpine terrain

  • Constant engine noise from 25,000 motorcycles

  • Headline acts including Roger Hodgson of Supertramp

  • Coverage needed for the rear and VIP section

The solution

X-Line Advance at full scale, set up in record time

Front-of-house sound came from 18-per-side hangs of Electro-Voice X-Line Advance X2 in a left-right configuration, with 26 ground-stacked Electro-Voice X12/128 subwoofers handling the low end. The event also marked the debut of the newly launched Electro-Voice MFX Multi-Function Monitors, with 8 MFX-12MC 12-inch coaxial models deployed as front-fills. 2 delay towers, with 5-per-side hangs of Electro-Voice XLC line-array enclosures, covered the rear and VIP section.

The entire system was driven by Dynacord TGX amplifiers, while setup and control ran through the new Dynacord SONICUE sound system software, letting the crew configure the rig in record time.

The result

A sound Harley Davidson calls true rock ‘n’ roll

For Harley Davidson, choosing the right audio system meant finding the right kind of sound to match a truly classic brand. H.O.G. Event Manager Stephane Sahakian, a sound engineer before he joined Harley Davidson France, considered carefully what the event needed and found what he was looking for.

Across 4 festival nights, the system carried headline performances from the front rows, served by the debuting MFX-12MC front-fills, out to the rear and VIP section under the XLC delay towers. SONICUE kept setup and control quick, simple, and efficient for the Objectif+ crew.

  • Festival-grade sound for Europe's flagship Harley Davidson event

  • Front-fill duty handled by the newly launched MFX-12MC

  • Rear and VIP coverage from 2 XLC delay towers

  • System setup in record time with SONICUE
