Plainfield High School, Plainfield, New Jersey

One campus, three venues - performing arts facilities upgraded

Plainfield Public Schools put $4 million into Plainfield High School, rebuilding its auditorium and adding a black box theater and an eSports arena from the ground up. PureTek Group designed and installed Electro-Voice sound systems across all three spaces, each powered by Dynacord amplifiers. A 1,525-seat hall, an experimental theater, and a competitive gaming room each demanded its own approach to coverage, scale, and clarity.

Three rooms with different requirements

Plainfield Public Schools, in Plainfield, New Jersey, completed a big renovation centered on Plainfield High School, marked by a ribbon cutting in October 2024. The work covered three spaces: a fully refurbished 1,525-seat auditorium, a new black box theater, and a new eSports gaming arena.

PureTek Group of nearby Boonton, New Jersey, designed and installed Electro-Voice sound systems for each venue, every one driven by Dynacord power amplifiers. The auditorium serves as a hub for school performances, community events, and assemblies, while the black box room and the eSports arena were built to expand what the fine arts and athletics programs could do.

The challenge

Creating a sound system solution for one consistent standard

The auditorium needed concert-grade reach across 1,525 seats and a balcony, without the cost or complexity of a touring rig. The black box theater started from nothing. When the project began, the room had zero technology. The eSports arena needed clear audio for streaming competitions, plus a way to feed crowd energy back into the room.

Across all three, the brief was the same: clean coverage in spaces with very different shapes, loudspeakers that fit the architecture, and a result the district could stand behind for years.

  • A 1,525-seat auditorium with main floor and balcony

  • Concert-quality sound without touring-rig cost

  • A black box theater built from zero technology

  • An eSports arena needing clear audio

  • One consistent standard across all three venues

The solution

Electro-Voice coverage and Dynacord power for every room

In the auditorium, left-right Electro-Voice EVA line arrays cover the main seating area, each array built from three EVA-2082S elements and two EVA-2151D subwoofers. EVA delivers line-array performance without the cost and complexity of a concert rig. Eight EVC-1122 compact loudspeakers, mounted along the balcony lip on black EVC-UB2 brackets, handle the under-balcony seating. Three C3600 and four C2800 amplifiers for fixed installation provide plenty of power for the room.

The black box theater runs two wall-mounted EVC-1122 loudspeakers flanking the stage, powered by a single Dynacord C1300 amp. The eSports arena uses three EVID-P6.2 pendant ceiling speakers and EVID-S12.1 compact subwoofers driven by a Dynacord V600:4 amplifier. PureTek built a network that streams competitions onto the large auditorium screen and plays auditorium crowd reactions back into the eSports arena through the pendant speakers.

“We have worked with Gary Karlsrud at Electro-Voice for a long and have completed several school installs with their gear to great success. Plainfield wanted the best of the best, and we knew EV would get the job done.”

The result

From a hub stage to a streamed arena, every space delivers

The auditorium now carries performances, community events, and assemblies across all 1,525 seats and the balcony from one coherent system. The black box theater, which started with no technology at all, became a flexible space for dramatic arts education, professional development, experimental theater, and smaller performances.

The eSports arena lets students compete against other high schools over a streaming platform, with competitions mirrored onto the auditorium screen and live crowd reactions fed back into the gaming room. Three rooms, three roles, one consistent Electro-Voice and Dynacord standard across the campus.

  • Full, even coverage across 1,525 seats and balcony

  • A black box theater equipped from zero to fully capable

  • Superior audio performance for eSports competitions

  • Live crowd energy fed between auditorium and arena

  • One consistent standard across all three spaces
