The venue
A charity venue where young people learn the stage
Based in the Cornish town of Saltash, Livewire Youth Project gives young people a free route into music. Members can learn instruments and form bands, or go technical and study live and studio mixing, sound engineering, and stage lighting. The venue houses a professional recording studio, provided by Pete Townshend of The Who, and a 200-person capacity live music space.
That room does double duty. Established artists play prestigious fundraising shows there, but its main purpose is to give members a professional stage to practice on and perform in public. The audio equipment was aging and no longer met the standards required.

The challenge
Replace an aging PA with a system fit for training
Livewire needed more than a louder PA. The new system had to give performers a better onstage experience, cover the audience area evenly, and stand up as a teaching platform for the operation and maintenance of professional audio. With members and donors watching, the changeover also had to be fast.
The solution
A compact line array, powered for live work
A compact Electro-Voice line array with 5 XLE-181 elements per side now serves as the main system, with 6 EKX-18S subwoofers delivering the low frequencies. The entire PA is driven by 4 Dynacord L3600FD multi-channel power amplifiers for live applications.
The L3600FD brings FIR drive, on-board DSP, and sophisticated protection circuitry to the rig. The whole transformation took place in one day, so members and donors could experience the improvement immediately.
