The venue
A church that kept growing, and a sound system that did not
Established in 1966, Binh Thuan church is a notable religious site within Vietnam's Catholic community and one of the biggest churches in Ho Chi Minh City. Since its original construction, the building has been through several renovations and expansions to keep pace with its congregation.
The sound system did not keep pace. Selected more for its aesthetic than its acoustical properties, the existing installation fell further behind with every expansion, in a space where the reverberation time in the chancel runs to more than four seconds.
The challenge
Clarity in a chancel with massive reverberation times
The church set a clear brief: deliver high-quality sound across the whole chancel with no delay or echo, in a room that rings for more than 4 seconds. Just as important, the loudspeakers had to blend into the church's bright interior design and stay visually unobtrusive.
Integrator Duy Hoa Phat Corp specified the new system precisely to overcome the reverberance inside the church.
The solution
Precise and controlled coverage thanks to Vari Intense, paired with Dynacord power and processing
The answer came in white versions of the Electro-Voice EVC family of compact loudspeakers for fixed installation. A pair of EVC-1122-VI Vari Intense 12-inch two-way loudspeakers addresses the main congregational seating area. Its asymmetrical horn design ensures uniform coverage of the rectangular space so sermons reach every member of the congregation. Support comes from seven EVC-1082 8-inch two-way loudspeakers, with a pair of EVID S4.2TB and two Bosch LB2-UC30-L1 compact installation cabinets completing the layout. Five Dynacord L1300FD DSP amplifiers, each rated at 2x 650 W, provide power and processing for the system.
Electro-Voice microphones hold the same standard at the input end of the signal chain. Four wired ND96 dynamic supercardioid vocal microphones are joined by 4 RE3 UHF wireless systems with ND96 handhelds, and 12 RE92HW cardioid hanging microphones capture the harmonies of the choir.
