Daytime visitors dine and drink over background music that keeps conversation easy. After dark, the lounge steps up the SPL and runs in full club mode. One sound system serves both lives of the room: Electro-Voice loudspeakers driven by Dynacord L Series amplifiers.

The venue

A lounge that changes character after dark

ØLTERRA was created to give different customers different experiences. By day it is a relaxed dining and drinks destination, with background music tuned for conversation. By night it becomes a club, and the room has to deliver the energy that promise demands.

The owners already knew Electro-Voice and Dynacord from a Standard Radio Service installation at their other Kolkata venue, Carpe Diem. That history did not make the choice automatic. The equipment had to meet the specific needs of the 13,000 sq. ft. space and deliver the audio quality its patrons expect.

The challenge

One system for daytime dining and full club SPLs at night

The brief called for a system that serves both functions equally well across a 13,000 sq. ft. venue: a main lounge and dance floor built for a full-on club experience, a bar running at lower levels, and an outdoor terrace. As guests move away from the dance floor, levels need to fall away smoothly rather than drop off, so quieter areas stay usable even when the club is at full tilt.

The solution

A made-to-measure system that tapers with the room

Standard Radio Service drew on the Electro-Voice installed loudspeaker portfolio to match each zone. The main floor is covered by a pair of EVF-1152S 15-inch tops with low-end support from 2 QRx 218S dual-18 subwoofers. Moving away from the dance floor, 2 EVF-1122S 12-inch models hand over to 4 ZX1i 8-inch cabinets in the bar area, where ELX200-18SP 18-inch powered subwoofers keep the physical sensation of the low frequencies. Outside, 6 IP65-rated EVID-S5.2X weatherized speakers cover the terrace.

The entire system is driven by 8 Dynacord L Series amplifiers: 2 L1300FD (2 x 650 W), 2 L1800FD (2 x 950 W), and 4 L3600FD (2 x 1800 W). SONICUE Sound System Software was used to configure and tune the system for optimal performance.

The result

Full club mode, with quiet corners kept for conversation

Customer response to the new system concept has been extremely positive. Even when the venue acts as a club, there are still quieter areas where customers can dine and chat, all with seamless, full-range coverage and SPLs appropriate to each zone. ØLTERRA gets both of its lives from one rig, tuned once and ready for either.
