A former club site, reborn for Plymouth
The Depo sits on a former club site on Union Street and is now the home of Casa, Plymouth's leading electronic music brand founded by Techno DJ Ryan Platts and his business partner Ben Gill-Cary. Their aim was to bring the feel of Ibiza nightlife to the UK, with DJs and live bands building a dynamic scene across all music genres and filling a much-needed gap in the city's music life.
The building set the stakes. Structures like this do not attenuate sound well, and a 750-capacity club running deep electronic music risked disturbing its neighbors. The room had to be altered quite dramatically, with dichromatic chambers built in to contain the low end.
Club-level depth inside, silence at the street
One rig had to serve two very different jobs: DJ sets and live band performances, with fast reconfiguration between the two. It also had to deliver real sonic depth inside a 750-capacity room without a trace of it reaching the neighboring buildings.
Containment came from the building itself. The dichromatic chambers were neither the easiest nor the cheapest alteration, but they absorb the excess sub energy: around 25% of what enters a chamber comes back out, and nothing carries to the entrance.
X-Line Advance mains, TGX power, SONICUE control
Gary Platts, Head of Full Service at Concertsound, specified a front-of-house loudspeaker system from the Electro-Voice X-Line Advance family to cover the main dancefloor: stacked X2 two-way line-array elements, 3 per side, supplemented by 4 X12-128 subwoofers. The system also features an MFX multi-functional coax monitor rig.
Dynacord TGX series four-channel amplifiers drive the system, the recommended amplification for X-Line Advance. Their 96 kHz DSP carries multi-band PEQs, crossovers, limiters, and delay per channel, plus FIR-Drive and an onboard speaker preset library. SONICUE Sound System Software controls it all, making configuration between DJ sets and live performances straightforward.

“I’ve always been a fan of the X2. Having worked so well at various festivals and events, it made sense to specify X2 for The Depo. You can see the surface area of the speakers in front of you, however the jaw-dropping, totally immersing sound that is produced by such a small surface area is completely unfathomable. Once you’ve listened to something like the X2, you can’t listen to anything else the same ever again – it creates a real hair-on-the-back-of-the-neck moment that doesn’t happen very often in the industry these days.”
Casa has a home, and Plymouth has its scene back
The chambers do their job. From the entrance, nothing can be heard; once the doors open, guests walk from a quiet street into the full weight of the system, an arrival Gary Platts compares to Ibiza.
One system now covers everything Casa books, from DJ sets to live performances, with SONICUE handling the switch. Under difficult trading conditions the club has done exceptionally well, and Casa finally has an established home, with people returning for the same audio experience every time.
