The venue
A 900-seat nave, two ways to worship
King of Kings Lutheran Church serves the community of Woodbury, Minnesota, a suburb of Saint Paul. Its 900-seat nave hosts both contemporary and traditional worship services, so speech and music carry equal weight week after week.
The previous system could not keep up. Intelligibility varied from seat to seat, and the church decided on a new system several months before the pandemic, driven by a desire for greater clarity. For the work, King of Kings turned to Saint Paul-based Collins Electrical Construction, the regional firm that had recently installed its new lighting system.

The challenge
Eliminate uneven coverage, and the extra boxes with it
The brief was to eliminate uneven coverage while improving clarity and fidelity for both contemporary and traditional services. Already familiar with the facility, Collins project manager Shawn Withrow had a streamlined, high-performance system in mind: Electro-Voice loudspeakers powered and processed by Dynacord electronics.
Withrow contacted regional sales manager Dave Notch to arrange a loudspeaker demo incorporating the latest Dynacord electronics. The demo made King of Kings comfortable with the EVA system, and it convinced the church to step up to flown dual 18-inch subwoofers.
The solution
Twin EVA line arrays, powered by Dynacord
The primary system is a pair of EVA line arrays. Each hang places two EVA-2082S 90° horizontal dispersion cabinets atop a pair of 120° models; with two fixed-splay modules per cabinet, that is 8 line-array elements per side. Simple rigging plates connect the cabinets and hide completely behind cosmetic panels, while newly released DSP settings and a hybrid limiter scheme enhance acoustical performance and maximize output.
One EVF-1122S angles to each side to cover the side seating and choir loft, and two X12i-128 subwoofers fly further out above the congregation, all finished in white. A Dynacord IPX20:4, capable of up to 20,000 watts across its 4 channels, powers the arrays and subs, and a single C2800FDi supplies the EVFs. The Electro-Voice and Dynacord in-house design team used EASE mapping with SONICUE Sound System Software to ensure full, even coverage, and local company Twin Cities Sound handled the physical hang.

The result
Consistent sound, no matter where you sit
With services opening up again, the difference is plain to the King of Kings team and the congregation. Coverage is consistent throughout the nave, spoken word and lyrics are easier to understand in every seat, and music sounds fuller than before.
The new system also does more with less. The twin EVA arrays cover the full 900-seat nave on their own, and multiple fill speakers were eliminated in the process.
