The Wyldes, Cornwall
A record crowd in a Cornish orchard, carried by X-Line Advance
Paloma Faith drew the biggest attendance yet at The Wyldes, a family-run festival site in Cornwall and the only permanently licensed 10,000-capacity outdoor venue in the region. Regional events company NUB Sound answered with an Electro-Voice X-Line Advance X2 system on the main stage and XLE181 compact line arrays on the second. Front of house engineer Andy Williamson came away very impressed.

12 years from private party to 10,000-capacity festival site
The Wyldes is a family-owned and run independent festival site in Cornwall with a reputation for bringing some of contemporary music's biggest stars to the South West of England. In just 12 years it has grown from a 250-person private party into the only permanently licensed 10,000-capacity outdoor venue in the region.
Throughout that growth, regional events company NUB Sound has matched rising audiences with increasingly substantial front of house set-ups. When Paloma Faith arrived touring in support of her number 1 album The Architect, the site faced its biggest turnout yet.
Fill an expansive orchard site for the biggest crowd yet
The Wyldes sits in an orchard, and its real challenge is expansiveness: trees stretch for miles around the open site. A record turnout for Paloma Faith meant stepping up to a large-scale show where the technical spec had to be absolutely first class.
For NUB Sound, speaker choice is a reputation decision: the company only fields equipment it can trust. Both the main stage and the second stage needed complete flown systems.
X-Line Advance X2 on the main stage, XLE on the second
NUB Sound provided a comprehensive Electro-Voice X-Line Advance X2 system for the main stage. 2 arrays were flown in a left-right configuration with 9 enclosures per side: 6 X2-212/90 tops and 3 X2-212/120 down fills. Low end came from 12 X12-128 dual 18-inch subwoofers, positioned 6 per side with 2 in cardioid mode and 4 front facing.
On the second stage, a flown left-right set-up of 8 XLE181 compact line array elements per side was accompanied by 2 QRX 218S subwoofers per side. All power came from Electro-Voice TG7 amplifiers.

“At first when you see a compact box you expect it to sound small but this one has definitely surprised me. Right out of the box it sounded great and with very little EQ it was a joy. It’s the sort of system a production manager will love because it’s compact so it’ll fit in the truck and take up no space. I’d be more than happy to use this again. It sounds lovely. It’s a winner.”
Crystal clear across the orchard, with very little EQ
The biggest turnout in The Wyldes' 12 years heard a show its co-director describes as crystal clear. For Andy Williamson, mixing Paloma Faith at front of house on his first X-Line Advance outing, the compact boxes sounded great right out of the box and needed very little EQ.
For NUB Sound, the X2 system fulfilled every need on site: quick to fly, fast to get a sound, and compact enough to save truck space. The company called it a smart, modern system for a venue it counts among its best clients.
